How to Start Homeschooling Without Getting Overwhelmed

May 30, 2025

So… you’ve decided (or are seriously considering) homeschooling. Exciting, right? And also maybe a little terrifying. The sheer amount of information, options, and opinions out there can leave even the most confident parent wondering, “Am I cut out for this?”

Let me assure you: you absolutely are. And no, you don’t need to have a teaching degree or color-coded binders to get started.

Here’s how to ease into homeschooling without the overwhelm.

1. Know Why You're Homeschooling

Before diving into curriculum choices or Pinterest-perfect routines, get clear on why you’re choosing to homeschool.
Is it flexibility? A desire to slow down? More one-on-one time with your child? Dissatisfaction with traditional schooling?

Your “why” is your anchor. It’ll guide your decisions and keep you steady when self-doubt or outside opinions start to creep in.

Hint: Inside my homeschool course, I walk you through this process with a guided vision-setting worksheet that makes this crystal clear.

2. Start Small—With Structure in Mind

You don’t need to replicate school at home. In fact, you shouldn’t.

But that doesn’t mean you go in without a plan either.

Start with one or two subjects a day, a consistent start time, and a short routine to ease your child (and yourself) into the rhythm.
Even just an hour or two of intentional, connected learning each day can be powerful.

And yes—structure and freedom can coexist (something we talk a lot about in my course, because it’s what changed our family’s homeschool journey).

3. Forget the Comparison Game

Homeschooling is not one-size-fits-all.
What works for the Instagram family with matching lesson binders may not work for your toddlers and teenagers.

It’s okay if your homeschool doesn’t look like anyone else’s.
It’s supposed to reflect your family’s values, needs, and lifestyle.

4. You Don’t Need to Have It All Figured Out

Seriously. You don’t need to pick the “perfect” curriculum, have your whole year planned, or know every law in your state right now.

What you do need is a trusted guide—a step-by-step path to help you build a homeschool that actually works for your family.

That’s exactly why I created my course, Foundations of Homeschooling .

In it, I’ll walk you through everything from understanding state laws and defining your goals to choosing curriculum, setting up your space, and creating a flexible routine that actually sticks.

You don’t have to go it alone—and you don’t have to reinvent the wheel.
